Out of Africa

I have numerous s dresses, Frontier outfits and s dresses, but the one garment I have not tackled yet is the bustle dress. Partly because none of my friends have done it yet, but also partly because the bustle itself is rather daunting. Being as I like to make my own clothing, I would have to make a bustle, and even though I have made my own corset experienced sewists only please! I am intimidated by the wire frames and ties that make up this undergarment that was worn by millions of Western women at the height of the fashion in the s. A bustle is made of white cotton and can be a padded pillow-like item, or a wire framed petticoat that sticks out from the posterior. I read a little note that my grandmother jotted down at some point, allegedly from a conversation between her brother and sister. They were considered extremely provocative as they created a little sway in the hips when viewed from behind.

Video Out of Africa Self-appointed voice of contradiction, career chameleon and intrepid adventurer. Dr Darling spent six weeks last summer boring holes into Nigerian baobab trees. He is trying to rewrite the history of African settlements and contradicting the observations of botanists and ecologists in the process. He believes trees within the settlements were planted intentionally and looked after by the populations there. So I begun to bore and out of nowhere appears this Hausa woman, spinning wildly, tearing her clothes off to reveal her breasts.

Joni Webb This month, there has been a rash of blog stories about a newly restored house in Provence. The incredible restoration work of the Lafourcades. Long time readers know the name Lafourcade. The two story entry is a favorite room. The Magher Veranda cover story brought much attention to Ginny, of course, but it also introduced the Lafourcades to America.

Their web site showed other fabulous renovations by Bruno, Alexandre and Dominque and over the years their reputations have became legendary due to their exquisite taste and their ability to recreate a masterpiece. And so, when photos of a newly renovated Mas started showing up on Instagram, people took notice. Was it a new Lafourcade? Even Ginny herself took notice with this comment on Instagram: Ours was a Bruno Lafourcade collaboration.

Your Mas de Poiriers is gorgeous. I loved seeing that Ginny commented on the new Mas. News of the new Mas is spreading fast.

We look at the design of various types of furniture and furnishings, the interior architecture , as well as materials and techniques, plus some of the main designers. Menuiserie or Ebenisterie During the 16th century furniture was the province of the menuisier who worked in solid wood. The nearest English equivalent to the term is ‘carpenter and joiner’, but this is not entirely satisfactory.

At this time the technique of inlaying, extremely fashionable in Italy, was in France the province of the menuisier, but when it was replaced by more sophisticated techniques such as veneering and marquetry in the early years of the 17th century, the most skilled menuisiers became known as ebenistes, a term often translated as ‘cabinet-maker’ which again is not strictly accurate.

The menuisier proper continued to be responsible for seat-furniture, table-supports, such furniture as buffets a kind of cupboard and armoires wardrobes of solid wood, the decorative carved panelling for walls boiseries , door-cases and overdoor mouldings, and window-cases and shutters.

Mendip Tennis Otherwise known as Somersetshire, the modern county of Somerset covers 1, square miles and has a population of , Mendip is one of the most beautiful areas of Britain and includes not only the Mendip Hills, from which it takes its name, but also parts of the Somerset Levels, the caves at Wookey, the smallest city and the largest village in England. It also contains the supposed site of the mythical Isle of Avalon. It first appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s pseudohistorical account Historia Regum Britanniae “The History of the Kings of Britain” as the place where King Arthur’s sword Excalibur Caliburnus was forged and later where Arthur was taken to recover from his wounds after the Battle of Camlann.

Avalon was associated from an early date with immortal beings such as Morgan le Fay. Around , Avalon became associated with Glastonbury, when monks at Glastonbury Abbey claimed to have discovered the bones of Arthur and his queen. It is in the work of Gerald of Wales we find this connection made for the first time and it clearly draws on Geoffrey: What is now known as Glastonbury was, in ancient times, called the Isle of Avalon.

It is virtually an island, for it is completely surrounded by marshlands. In Welsh it is called Ynys Afallach, which means the Island of Apples and this fruit once grew in great abundance. After the Battle of Camlann, a noblewoman called Morgan, later the ruler and patroness of these parts as well as being a close blood-relation of King Arthur, carried him off to the island, now known as Glastonbury, so that his wounds could be cared for.

In my previous home, many of my houses were displayed in one upstairs room where I painted a Rufus Porter-style mural around three sides of the room. Howard and Sons of Berners Street in London were the foremost upholstery maker of the nineteenth century, regarded in the same way as Gillow were for cabinet furniture. Howard and Sons were such an important company that they collaborated with Gillow on several important projects and may have even manufactured pieces of upholstered furniture for Gillow as well as other important makers such as Maple and Co.

Howard and Sons exhibited at all the large exhibitions of the nineteenth century including the Great Exhibition of and the subsequent shows at Crystal Palace, as well as exhibitions in America and France. Howard and Sons had the Royal Warrant and supplied several Royal residences with many items of antique furniture, most frequently of course with upholstery. Although Howard and Sons supplied almost any item for the nineteenth century house and were renowned for their excellent build quality and superb finishing in all areas of chattels and interior decorating, it is their upholstered furniture for which the company is now so famous.

Howard and Sons really lead the way with the design and manufacture of upholstered furniture in the nineteenth century. The upholstered easy armchairs, sofas, wing chairs, library chairs, stools, pouffes, chaise longues and day beds made by Howard and Sons were better than normal pieces of the same period in many ways. Details such as the “siege de duvet” upholstery system for comfort, pocketed cushions, quad lashed springs and so on are all key features that other makers were simply not using, whether through lack of competence or because of cost.
